Course: Make a rya rug from a picture - Day 2/3

  • Kutomo Craft Studio Malagankatu 5 00220 Helsinki Finland (map)

Make a rya rug from a picture

Kutomo is hosting a course where you can get a personal rya rug design based on your own photo. The finished rya rug will be an artwork or an everyday object with a story of its own. The design is created digitally before the course, and after the course the participants will receive the design for their own use. During the course, we will create a yarn sample card based on the rya rug design, learn how to sew a rya rug onto a ready-made fabric backing as well as learn to interpret a model design and a yarn plan. The teaching language is Finnish, but it’s also possible to get instructions in English.

Course timetable:

To make sure there will be enough time to make the design and order materials, the photo used for the design has to be selected by 15 March. The cost of the materials will be paid beforehand. Designing the rya rug will take place before the actual course dates, and it will be done either in the course Facebook group or via email.

About the teacher:

Jenni made her first rya rug at school at the age of 10. That sparked her love for handicrafts and rya rugs, and in 2016 Jenni set up her own company, where she organises craft courses in places that have special cultural significance or are otherwise interesting. Jenni is especially fond of sewing rya rugs because the technique is easy to learn for people of all ages. The traditional Finnish rya rug speaks volumes of its maker, its designer and its owner. It is a unique work of art.

Jenni is an artisan, an IT engineer, a vocational teacher and has a degree in business management. Because of her diverse background, Jenni’s courses are well planned and managed, and every participant’s individual needs will be taken into consideration. Everyone will get all the help they need, and Jenni will be more than happy to give her guidance and tips. Jenni’s warm-hearted way of meeting each individual makes for a relaxing and open atmosphere. Jenni takes care of the course participants before, during and after the course, and she will encourage and motivate the participants.

Jenni is environmentally conscious, and uses materials and resources in a careful manner. In her business, Jenni also offers support for people who have difficulties in finding employment. Jenni’s humane and environmental values are evident in everything she does, including her business.
